How Zakat is calculated

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: an annual charitable payment of 2.5% on the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, provided that wealth is above the nisab threshold. Nisab is defined by the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because gold and silver prices move every day, the rupee value of nisab changes daily β€” which is why this calculator pulls live prices automatically.

Add up your zakatable wealth β€” cash, bank balances, the value of any gold and silver, and money invested in business or shares. If the total is at or above the nisab shown above, your Zakat is 2.5% of that total.

Why 87.48 g and 612.36 g?

Classical sources define nisab as 20 mithqal of gold and 200 dirhams of silver. In Pakistan these are expressed as 7.5 tola of gold and 52.5 tola of silver; at 11.664 g per tola that is 87.48 g and 612.36 g β€” the convention also used by the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance. Many Gulf and international bodies round to 85 g of gold and 595 g of silver instead, which gives a slightly lower threshold. Both are valid scholarly positions; the difference is small.

Separately, the government fixes an official nisab each year for the automatic Zakat deduction from bank accounts on the 1st of Ramadan. For 1447 AH (Ramadan 2026) the Administrator General Zakat set it at Rs 503,529, based on silver. That figure decides whether a bank deducts Zakat from your account; it is not a ruling on your personal obligation, which depends on your total wealth on your own Zakat date.

What this includes & its limits

  • Uses live gold & silver prices; you pick the nisab basis (silver = lower & more common, gold = higher).
  • Assumes the wealth was held for one lunar year and excludes personal-use assets (home, car, everyday items).
  • Doesn't net out debts or handle asset-specific rulings β€” consult a scholar for edge cases.
