How we calculate

Last updated: 13 October 2026

Every number on HonestCalcs comes from a rule someone official wrote down β€” a tax law, a revenue procedure, an admission policy or a regulator's notification. This page explains where those rules come from, how we turn them into calculators, and how we keep them current.

1. Primary sources first

We take figures from the body that sets them, not from other calculator sites. Where an official document is hard to access, we cross-check at least two reputable secondary sources (for example, a Big Four firm's tax alert) and say so on the page.

2. One dated data file per rule set

Rates are never typed into page code. Each rule set β€” say, the 2026 IRS brackets or Pakistan's FY 2026-27 salary slabs β€” lives in a single versioned data file with its effective date, source and a β€œlast updated” date. Every calculator and every worked example reads from that file, so when the rules change, one edit updates the whole site and the visible date changes with it.

3. Worked examples use the real code

The worked examples in our articles are checked against the same functions that power the calculators, and by hand against the official formula. If an example and the calculator ever disagree, that's a bug β€” please tell us.

4. When we update

  • US tax: each autumn when the IRS publishes next year's inflation adjustments, and whenever a new law changes them.
  • Pakistan tax: within days of the Finance Act each June/July.
  • Admissions: each admission season, when PM&DC, HEC or the university publishes its policy.
  • Energy: when NEPRA notifies a change to net-billing rules or buyback rates.
  • Gold & silver: automatically, every day.

5. What we deliberately leave out

A calculator that tries to model every situation ends up hiding its assumptions. Ours aim at the common case and say plainly what they skip β€” tax credits, local taxes, unusual deductions, department-level admission exceptions. Every tool has a β€œWhat this includes & its limits” section so you know when to check with a professional.

6. Rounding and privacy

Results are rounded to whole dollars or rupees for display; the underlying math keeps full precision. Most calculations run entirely in your browser and nothing you type is stored β€” see our privacy policy.

7. Advertising never changes a result

HonestCalcs may show ads to stay free. Advertisers have no say in our calculations, content or recommendations.
